I had the great pleasure of reading in the Local Writers Read Series, hosted by Josh Gauthier and Claire Guyton at the Zoom version of Quiet City Books in Lewiston, ME. I read following prose writers Sue Repko (memoir) and Jen George (fiction). The theme was Borders, so I read from a story full of them, “Volunteer,” from my collection, The Artstars.
I moved to Maine in 2015 and I’m still figuring the place out. These geese know it better than me. I don’t dare put Maine in my fiction yet, but I’m working up to it. In the meantime, I’ll share a little of my research. And by research, I mean walking. Walking is my favorite form of research. I’ve learned the best time to do it is on a cold day with a cloudy sky, low tide, at around 3:30 PM. At this latitude we have a long period of oblique light every morning and evening. All around turns to glitter. I don’t know if the geese care, but the people sure do.
